Teaching Statement

Just after I finished high school, I began to seek out opportunities to mentor and share my knowledge with other people. I began by teaching weekend digital design and animation courses, then joined university tutoring and peer-education programs, lectured in progressive summer schools, and finally at a graduate level began working as a teaching assistant (TA), and then sessional instructor and term lecturer.

I have TAed an impressive 15 courses throughout my MSc and early years of my PhD across interactive arts and technology and cognitive science departments. During this time I was fortunate to be mentored by the most remarkable and admired instructors I had the privileged to know: Chantal Gibson and Dr. Mark Blair. Thanks to Chantal’s mentorship I began to teach courses in my department and perform guest lectures locally and internationally, typically on the topics of research methods, cognitive science theory for design, and virtual reality.
My teaching philosophy is rooted in three key principles
01
Ethos: The fundamental pedagogical approach of my courses is the emphasis on cultivating the culture of professional ethos in the classroom. By presenting and discussing professional ethos, and appealing to students' own role in supporting the collaborative learning process and the culture of the classroom. This fosters the sense of self-efficacy and responsibility in students not only for their own learning outcomes, but also for the whole classroom.

Belonging: Aligned with the focus of my research, I believe that social connection is crucial for stimulating motivation and good learning outcomes. Research shows that we engage and learn best when learning is situated as a social practice. Therefore, I put great effor into fostering a sense of belonging between students to form a community in our classroom.

Empathy, Equity, and Diversity: Finally, I approach my teaching practice from the point of empathy. I love teaching for the opportunity to connect with students and support them on their learning journey. Teaching predominately at a Canadian university, I acknowledge the wide diversity of my students, who come from different ethnic and cultural backgrounds, socio-economic status and life situations. While everyone is held to the same standard of professional ethos for the benefit of the classroom, I strongly belief that given the diverse starting points, its crucial that instructors take effort to understand the diversity among their students and find an equitable approach, as a one size fits all model neglects to provide support where needed allowing for flourishing of each individual student.

Courses

Upper level intensive undergraduate course taking students through ideation, prototyping and development of a meaningful immersive realities project with the use of Unity for VR development. Projects are done in teams of 4 students, who would follow an agile development process to rapidly iterate through their ideas. The focus is placed on designing meaningful experiences that could elicit positive change in immersants, not in the technological implementation. Its an intensive full time course with full week of classroom time that uses various unconventional and innovative techniques to engage, inspire, challenge, and connect students fostering their growth mindset, self-efficacy, reflection, and collaborative learning practices.

Taught in collaboration with Prof. Bernhard Riecke

Semesters: Summer 2023 Intersession

Institution: Simon Fraser University, Vancouver, Canada

Guest Lectures

To provide design students with inspiration for creating meaningful projects for their term project, I have presented an overview of different design strategies employed by designers and artist to stimulate a genuine feeling of connection. I have discussed approaches used by practitioners and how they are backed up by theory for psychology and social sciences.

Institution: Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Stockholm, Sweden

Consulting

Graduate level course for new Masters and PhD students performing research in the field of human-centred design. The course introduces students to the epistemological traditions, worldviews, methodologies, and methods of inquiry that can be employed in this interdisciplinary field to investigate and evaluate technology and users’ experience with it. It is a survey course including a broad range of methodologies scientific, social science, humanities, design and art-based approaches.
